چکیده

Minimization of the `∞ (or maximum) norm subject to a constraint that imposes consistency to an underdetermined system of linear equations finds use in a large number of practical applications, including vector quantization, peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) (or “crest factor”) reduction in communication systems, approximate nearest neighbor search, and peak force minimization in robotics and control. This paper analyzes the fundamental properties of signal representations obtained by solving such a convex optimization problem. We develop bounds on the maximum magnitude of such representations using the uncertainty principle (UP) introduced by Lyubarskii and Vershynin, IEEE Trans. IT, 2010, and study the efficacy of `∞-norm-based PAPR reduction. Our analysis shows that matrices satisfying the UP, such as randomly subsampled Fourier or i.i.d. Gaussian matrices, enable the computation of what we call democratic representations, whose entries all have small and similar magnitude, as well as low PAPR. To compute democratic representations at low computational complexity, we present two new, efficient convex optimization algorithms. We finally demonstrate the efficacy of democratic representations for PAPR reduction in a DVB-T2-based broadcast system.

Global value perceptions: The legitimising functions of western representations of democracy

This paper argues that a fundamental antagonism between democracy and nondemocracy organises lay thinking on global issues. We review key findings of a long-standing experimental research programme that examined the “Democracy-as-value” hypothesis across a variety of political and social contexts. This hypothesis contends that democracy is an ideological belief system that provides value to dem...

The pros and cons of democracy

We introduce the concept of “democracy,” in which the individual bits in a coarsely quantized representation of a signal are all given “equal weight” in the approximation to the original signal. We prove that such democratic representations cannot achieve the same accuracy as optimal nondemocratic schemes.

A Universal Investigation of $n$-representations of $n$-quivers

noindent We have two goals in this paper. First, we investigate and construct cofree coalgebras over $n$-representations of quivers, limits and colimits of $n$-representations of quivers, and limits and colimits of coalgebras in the monoidal categories of $n$-representations of quivers. Second, for any given quivers $mathit{Q}_1$,$mathit{Q}_2$,..., $mathit{Q}_n$, we construct a new quiver $math...
